Climate and neighborhood tips
- Climate
- Mild but wet year-round: 38–45°F in winter, 65–72°F in summer, and rain any month. Expect wind off the IJ that makes it feel 10 degrees colder — layer three thin pieces rather than one thick coat.
- Spring & autumn
- March–May and September–October swing between sun and downpour in the same hour. Waterproof shoes matter more than a heavy coat.
- Canal Ring & Jordaan
- Narrow bridges, uneven brick, and steep staircases in old buildings. Flat shoes and a soft-sided bag you can carry up a near-ladder staircase.
- Museumplein
- Long indoor days — dress in layers you can strip off. Bag size limits at the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum: bring a small bag so you skip the cloakroom queue.
- De Pijp & Albert Cuyp
- Market days mean cash-friendly small stalls and crowds. Keep your bag zipped in front, and bring a tote for cheese and stroopwafels.
- Amsterdam Noord
- The free ferry deck is windy and exposed — hood up, hat on. Evenings at NDSM get chilly fast even in July.
- Red Light District at night
- Busy and generally safe, but crowded and loud. Wear a bag that closes, skip flashy jewelry, and walk the lit main streets back.
- Bike lanes
- If you rent a bike, pack a light with you or use one with a working lamp — police fine unlit bikes after dark. Long coats and scarves catch in wheels; tuck them in.
